Actual catch (commercial catch and local consumption) have been made available by the Royal Thai Department of Fisheries for the Ubolratana reservoir, North East Thailand, since the impoundment of the lake in 1965. The data have been used to assess the possible relationship between the actual catch and morphometric parameters of the lake (maximum area, depth, shore line, difference between maximum and minimum area) and actual catch the year before. A comparison of the predictive power is carried out between multiple linear regression analysis, a generalised additive model, a regression tree analysis, an autoregression analysis and an artificial neural network. A mass-balance Ecopath model of coastal areas in the Mekong Delta has been constructed for a quantitative description of the trophic structure of the ecosystem. The model is used to estimate the important biological parameters and relationships among the different ecologically important groups. The model is based on the data collected from bottom trawling. There are 14 functional groups based on 58 species from coastal areas in the Mekong Delta survey such as shrimps, squids, crabs, mackerel, small pelagics, demersal fishes, benthic feeders, predator fishes and trash fish. A comparative study of the Sine-saloum (Senegal) and Gambia (The Gambia) estuaries was performed based on trophic model outputs that describe the system structure and functioning. These trophic models were constructed such as to differentiate main energetic flows in the systems and express how climate change may have impacted ecosystem resilience to change. Estuarine fish assemblages are highly resilient despite exposure to vast hydrodynamic variations and stress. Twelve diel surveys were carried out in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka viz. Minneriya, Udawalawe and Victoria, to investigate diel feeding patterns, daily ration and relative food consumption in fish populations. Stomach content weights of different size classes of various fish species in the three reservoirs in 12 diel surveys were analysed using an iterative method, MAXIMS. The structure, dynamics and productivity of marine ecosystems depend mainly on their underlying food webs. In temperate marine ecosystems, specifically in the English Channel, strong seasonality, habitat diversity and variability in the sources of available organic matters are controlling factors affecting the trophodynamics of these networks. Physical restoration of dykes and water gates along the shorelines of the Prey Nup area was done in 1998 to preserve rice field areas from being washed-off during high tides. The four first polders constructed resulted in the recuperation of about 5,500 ha for rice field cultivation. Before the rehabilitation, the area was also a common dwelling place for freshwater, brackish water and marine fish species (43 species). Information regarding effects of seasonal variations on species richness and stock assessment were obtained from capture surveys of native fishermen using 11 different kinds of fishing gears from 1998 to 2001. The diet composition and feeding habits have been investigated for several economically important indigenous species based on diel surveys collected from the Ubolratana reservoir (Thailand). For some of these populations the daily food ration, feeding periods, ingestion and evacuation rates were determined using MAXIMS, an iterative computer software utilising 24-hour series of stomach content data obtained in natural populations. The results obtained provide useful information for studies of the trophic relationship in the reservoir and can be explained by some observed migrating patterns of these fish populations. |
